Astorga, ancient Asturica Augusta, blends Roman heritage, the Camino de Santiago and modernism. Its jewel is the Episcopal Palace, designed by Antoni Gaudí, with the cathedral just steps away.

Things to do

  • Walk the walls and the remains of the Roman town.
  • Visit the Episcopal Palace and the cathedral.
  • Try the chocolate, a centuries-old local tradition, and the cocido maragato, eaten “in reverse”: meats first, then chickpeas, and soup last.

Astorga lies on the Camino Francés, so it is a regular stop for pilgrims.
